Cash
- Everyday spending and shorter-term plans
- An emergency fund
- Money that may be needed at short notice
- The comfort of easy access
Not the money you need for bills, everyday life or something coming up soon.
But if you have savings you’ve built up over time, a pay rise, a bonus, a lump sum or simply a little more left over each month, there may be more it could do for your future.
If you have money available and want to give it the opportunity to grow, you shouldn’t need to be wealthy or know the right language. Pension Pulse exists to make financial advice accessible to everyone, without the fuss or jargon.
Not all money needs to do the same thing. Some has to stay close at hand, whether that’s for everyday life, emergencies or something you know is coming up.
Other money may have much longer before you expect to use it. And when money has time on its side, you can start asking whether it could have more opportunity to grow.
Neither is automatically better.
What matters is what the money is for and when you expect to use it.
Cash can stay the same and still become worthless.
Over time, rising prices can mean the same amount of money buys you less.
One of the biggest misconceptions about investing is that it’s reserved for the wealthy. Or that you need to already understand the stock market and speak its language before you can put some of your money to work.
Simply put, investing gives money you won’t need for a while the opportunity to grow over time.
You don’t need to choose individual shares or follow the markets yourself. Your money can be spread across a broad mix of investments, while Pension Pulse helps you understand where it’s invested, why, and how that supports what you want your money to do.
The industry has a habit of making all of that sound far more complicated than it needs to.
Pension Pulse exists to make investing easier to understand, easier to access and something you can explore with confidence.
Here are a few common terms, and what they actually mean.
Investing should come with questions.
And if you’re not sure what to ask, these are the ones worth starting with.
We’re not here to brush past the risks or hide behind financial language. We’re here to help you understand what investing means for your money, what to expect and whether it feels right for you.
Investments can fall in value and you could get back less than you put in. But seeing the value fall along the way isn’t the same thing as losing everything. A diversified portfolio spreads your money across lots of investments rather than relying on one company or one outcome. History has shown that major stock markets can recover from substantial downturns given time, although past performance isn’t a guide to what will happen in future. That’s why we focus on giving your money enough time, spreading risk and making sure the level of risk you take is appropriate for you.
There are protections around the way regulated financial advice and investment services work. Pension Pulse is FCA authorised and regulated, and eligible claims may also be protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme if an authorised adviser or provider fails and cannot meet a valid claim. For eligible investment claims, FSCS protection can be up to £85,000 per person, per authorised firm. What that protection doesn’t do is guarantee how your investments will perform. Protection around who looks after your money is different from a guarantee about what markets will do.
Cash has an important job. It makes sense for money you might need soon, an emergency fund and situations where easy access matters. But cash has a quieter downside too. The number in your account can stay the same while rising prices mean it buys less. Investing involves a different trade-off: its value will move up and down, but money you can leave for longer has more opportunity to grow. So it isn’t really about cash versus investing. It is about giving different money the job that best fits what you need it for.
At Pension Pulse, we’ll help you understand whether the amount you have available makes sense to invest and whether our service is right for you. Our belief is that investing shouldn’t be reserved for people with huge amounts of money. What matters first is that the money is genuinely available, you aren’t relying on it for everyday life or something coming up soon, and investing is appropriate for what you want that money to do.
